Portfolio Themes: A UX/UI Case Study

Designing multiple portfolio experiences to showcase diversity and gather user feedback

Project Type UX/UI Design
Timeline 2024
Role Designer & Developer

The Challenge

After creating my initial portfolio, I received feedback that it didn't effectively showcase my UI/UX design capabilities. The portfolio was functional and visually appealing, but it lacked evidence of my design thinking process, user-centered approach, and ability to create diverse experiences.

The Solution

Instead of redesigning a single portfolio, I created three distinct portfolio experiences that demonstrate different design philosophies and interaction patterns. Each version serves a different purpose and showcases different aspects of my design capabilities.

  • Multiple portfolio versions showcasing design diversity
  • Interactive voting system to gather user feedback
  • Data-driven insights into user preferences
  • Demonstration of UX thinking through user research

The Three Portfolio Experiences

Each version explores different design philosophies, interaction patterns, and user experiences

Design Process

How I approached creating multiple portfolio experiences

1

Research & Ideation

I analyzed different portfolio approaches used by designers and developers. I identified three distinct interaction paradigms: traditional grid layouts, narrative scrolling experiences, and interactive exploration interfaces. Each represents a different way users consume portfolio content.

2

Design & Development

I designed and developed three complete portfolio experiences, each with its own visual language, interaction patterns, and user flow. While sharing the same content, each version presents it in a fundamentally different way, showcasing my ability to think about design from multiple perspectives.

3

User Research Integration

I created a voting system that allows visitors to explore all three versions and vote for their favorite. This transforms the portfolio from a static showcase into a living research project, demonstrating my understanding of user-centered design and data-driven decision making.

4

Continuous Learning

The voting data provides insights into which design patterns users find most intuitive, enjoyable, or effective. This feedback loop demonstrates my commitment to iterative design and user research—core principles of UX/UI design.

Key Insights

User Research Through Voting

The voting system serves multiple purposes beyond just gathering preferences. It demonstrates several key UX/UI principles:

User-Centered Design

By allowing users to choose their preferred experience, I'm putting user preferences at the center of the design process.

Data-Driven Insights

The voting data reveals which interaction patterns users find most intuitive and enjoyable, providing valuable design insights.

Design Diversity

Showcasing multiple approaches demonstrates my ability to think beyond a single solution and explore different design possibilities.

Iterative Thinking

The voting system creates a feedback loop that informs future design decisions, showing my understanding of iterative design processes.

Key Takeaways

Problem-Solving

Instead of simply redesigning, I reframed the challenge as an opportunity to demonstrate UX thinking through multiple solutions.

User Research

The voting system transforms the portfolio into a research tool, showing my ability to integrate user feedback into the design process.

Design Versatility

Creating three distinct experiences showcases my ability to work across different design paradigms and interaction models.

Process Documentation

This case study itself demonstrates my ability to document design thinking, explain decisions, and communicate the value of UX/UI work.
